Why Gluten Free in Japan is Hard

You’ve dreamed about Japan.
Then you remember what dinner looks like.

Soy sauce in everything. Menus you can't read. Staff who nod politely at your translation card while you wonder if they really understood. The safest meal you can find is a convenience-store banana.

If you're celiac or seriously gluten-free, you already know the exhausting truth: travel isn't relaxing when every meal is a research project with your health as the stakes. And Japan has a reputation as one of the hardest countries on earth to navigate gluten-free.

Most people respond one of two ways. They don't go. Or they go, eat plain rice for two weeks, and spend the trip hungry and anxious in the world's greatest food country.

But there’s a third option.

Our Safety System

“But how safe is it really? ” - fair question. Here’s the system.

01

We verified in person

Every venue is visited or directly interviewed about ingredients, stock bases, sauces and cross-contamination, not pulled from a blog post that's three years old.

02

We ran the exact route first

March 2026 was this itinerary's live test, with celiac guests and everyone loved it.

03

Celiac host is with you at every meal

Restaurant reservations and communication sorted out before we step foot into the restaurant. Questions get answered before the food is ordered, not after it arrives.

04

We're honest about the limits

No one on earth can guarantee a third-party kitchen. What we guarantee is the most rigorous verification we know how to do, dedicated gluten-free venues wherever possible, and instant support if anything ever feels off. That record is the thing we protect hardest.

March 2026 - The Proof

We already did this trip.
Here’s what happened.

In March 2026 our founding group spent ten days eating their way across Japan, and everyone had a blast.

The proof was in the pudding.

“I’m at Haneda at my gate, reflecting on what a marvelous experience we’ve had with you all. It has been a sincere pleasure sharing meals, the magic of new places, and the itinerary including go-carting, Nara Park, Kyoto Shrines and Temples, and staying at high quality hotels.. Thanks Josh for all your initiative and planning.”

-Mark - 2026 March Traveller

“Sadly, Im leaving Japan today but first another meal at Soranoira in Tokyo Station!! Remembering when we all met here earlier this month. It was a great trip. I am glad to have gotten to know each of you and hope our paths cross again”

-Sharon - 2026 March Traveller
